Football fans converged on the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday to celebrate the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Some 4000 fans representing the 32 participating nations attended the festivities, bringing flags and banners to mark the 25-day countdown until the World Cup kicks off. The event also previewed the tournament’s official song ‘Unity Beat’, and included live cultural performances and presentations.
The event was hosted by former Australia international and FIFA Women in Football Leadership participant, Amy Duggan.
“To see the [Sydney Harbour] Bridge bouncing like that with everyone doing the Unity Beat was just absolutely outstanding,” Duggan said.
“The thousands of people marching down and the jersey unveiled. Beautiful moments from this morning. As the sun came up, I just thought: ‘How lucky are we?’ They call Australia ‘the Lucky Country’. Lucky to do what we did today and lucky to have the FIFA Women’s World Cup on our shores.”
Joining Duggan are grassroots football and multicultural communities, as well as local and international football greats including FIFA legend Joy Fawcett. Also present were NSW minister for Jobs and Tourism John Graham, representatives from co-host Member Associations Football Australia and New Zealand Football, and FIFA officials.
The event also unveiled a 17-metre tall Unity Jersey featuring the tournaments’ “Beyond Greatness” slogan and distinctive cultural elements from the host countries. It features a palette based on rainforests, earth, mountains, cities and water, as well as a radial motif that includes 32 colourful squares representing the participating nations.
