Industry mourns Esben Storm
Actor, producer and director Esben Storm has passed away in Sydney, aged 60.
The head of Storm Productions, which he established in 1978, Esben was known for his work on television, both as director (particularly in childrens’ programs such as Round the Twist, Crash Zone, The Genie from Down Under and 2007’s SBS series Kick) and actor – his last appearance was on All Saints .
Storm directed the features 27A (1974), In Search of Anna (1978), With Prejudice (1982), Stanley (1984) , Deadly (1991) and Subterano (2003). He also made documentaries such as The Tasty Bust Reunion and America, and for many years tried, unsuccessfully, to adapt John Marsden’s novel Tomorrow, When the War Began.
This is horrifying news to say the least. I only just spoke at length with my old buddy Esben last week about joining forces to get a film of his up. Esben was a great guy and had the very same difficulties in this god forsaken industry than many of us have. The saga of the last few years that he’s had to deal with were to say the least a disgrace to the Australian industry.
I met Esben first as a director when he directed me on Blue Heelers. I kept in touch and finally was working on a way to pull him out of ongoing issues he’d had with the boys club.
Esben will be sadly missed by so many people and I send my condolences to his friends and family on this terrible day!!!

It is a shocking and saddest news for me and my family! We lost our best friend in Australia. Since one day in October 2005 I received a phone call from him, and started to make his documentary , in the following years our friendship had developed far more beyond the working relationship. Esben was a such wonderful man with sense of humour, passion of creation, loved his family and his friends…….

Esben is/was a truly good man. I loved working with him, hanging with him, eating and drinking with him and laughing with him. He had a burning independent spirit (check his work in the great “Going Down”) and always felt an outsider in the industry, which is criminal. This is really troubling news. Esben changed the world in so many ways that matter. He brought quality television to children through his work with the Australian Children’s Television Foundation and was the driving force behind ‘Round the Twist’ and several other series. His enthusiasm and his energy were infectious, and he impressed everyone who had the pleasure of working with him as a man of great humour and decency, good will and humanity. More so, his love for his family was what constituted the most important thing in his life and defined his sense of life’s greatest meaning and achievement. My thoughts are with Lisa and the family.

Round the Twist was an under-heralded classic series. I used to watch it with my kids as they grew with it. He always added a zanniness not seen enough in Australian TV, kids or otherwise. We will miss him, as a friend and great Aussie film maker.

Mid 1975. Young kid working on grant film based at Smart Street Films Rose Bay completely blown away by an inspirational group that was forging a critical voice in a resurgent industry. The first time I encountered Esben was when he was playing a psychotic child pornographer in Hayden Keenans cult pic Pandemonium… 🙂 – A few years later we were reunited on the set of Twist and then Genie where he shined as a brilliant director… never one to settle in the safe zone, the scope of this enigmatic man bridged the entire creative spectrum.
Esben always did it his way, with passion and no fear, relentlessly pushing boundaries while circumnavigating much of the small mindedness and closed door club of the shallow and egotistical Australian Film & TV industry. I studied at the Swinburne Film School for 3 years in the 1970’s, and Esben was regarded as someone to whom we could all aspire. He was part of the early Film School years, and with Hayden Keenan, Bert Dealing, Gil Armstrong, Don Featherstone, Ivan Hexter, and many more, forged the way for adventurous film production in this country. What a kick in the guts! I met Esben with Haydn Keenan and Richard Moir at Film Australia 40 years ago. He had such enthusiasm and was so candid. And such a hard working team player (on GENTLE STRANGERS as 3rd AD, FLASHPOINT as 2nd AD and THE OFFICE PICNIC as first AD)
In all of those films he did memorable work as a bit player. Years later we shared a scene in GOING DOWN and he helped out Meg Stewart and me in LAST BREAKFAST IN PARADISE. Like everyone else I remember the laugh and the warmth. Someone has put the cut in the wrong place.

Es was in some of the best form he had been in for years and was talking new projects. His operation last year had envigorated and given him a new lease on life.
A little door on the sunny uplands of my youth just closed.
His funeral is at 12.30 Friday April 1st at Macquarie Park Crematorium North Ryde and from 4pm till midnight there will be a last man standing celebration at the Clovelly Bowling Club

He helped shape all our indiviualities. He taught us to break the mould rather than conform. For that … skill .. he did not get the recognition and the opportunities he deserved. 27A still sticks in my mind – writer, director, editor at 24!
I worked with him on Twist. He re wrote the hand book on childrens drama. Every Australian between the ages of 25 and 30 can sing that theme song – such was it’s impact.

Esben is the unsung hero of the development of the children’s television production industry in Australia. So many achievements would not have been possible without him.
In 1997 he was presented with a special Award for the exceptional contribution he made to the Foundation’s programs over a 15 year period. By then we had won 62 national and international awards and sold programs into 94 countries and Esben had been involved in most of them either writing, editing, workshopping, acting and mentoring writers or directing. His passion, enthusiasm, wit, intelligence, energy; his ability to challenge and motivate were unequalled.
He worked with children brilliantly, the crews loved him, he could sweet talk the most hardened practioners and won over the doyenne of the BBC Children’s Department to buy Round the Twist when every other production company I talked to turned up their noses and said – might work on paper but never on the screen.
Round the Twist is an iconic Australian series.There is not a child who grew up in Australia in the last 20 years who does know and love that series. But structurally it broke new ground. It was the first children’s mini series to go into production under the new FFC guidelines and has been the model for the industry since. It was the first TELEVISION series to go into profit for the FFC. It sold all round the world and brought to the attention of the international industry the Australian production industry.
It was uncompromisingly Australia but was loved from Brazil, Japan, Zimbabwe to the USSR. It screened in the top 10 children’s program’s in the UK 4 times. It won its time slot in Sweden.On the strength of the success of Round the Twist the BBC invested half the budget for the Genie From DownUnder, knowing Esben was the Script Editor and Director . This was unheard of and the precedent for the BBC’s future interest in Australian productions.
There is so much that could be said about Esben and his achievements and much that is not well known – so much of what he did slipped under the radar of this harsh industry. But those who worked with him knew the brilliance of the man and the lengths he would go to to improve the quality of what he did at every level.
I spoke with Frank Strangio yesterday who worked with Esben as a composer on Round the Twist. He described their meetings where they would both get as excited as kids by ideas for the score. When Esben would leave, Frank would stand there thinking, now how am I going to do that. But he would and Little Squirt, one of their collaborations won the AFI, PRIXJEUNESSE , an Emmy nomination and a host of other awards. More importantly the audience loved it.
The life and work experiences I shared with Esben will remain with me forever.
There are many who ride on his back. He was a pioneer in children’s programming and no matter what creative clashes or professional differences I had with Esben along the way I always loved him.

“Hey, how are ya?”, he’d say, and giggle, and I’d know it was Esben on the phone. I was thrilled to have his attention for the next twenty, thirty minutes. Ideas were flying recently, drafts and scripts – were they ever in short supply? Esben appeared to be on a roll – it is impossible to imagine that resilience, creative energy and mental acuity, gone.
Professionally, I feel Esben sought to bring out the best in people. Producing me, he would say “That was great, truly wonderful… but I wonder if there is something… more?”. As exasperating and familiar as those words became, I never stopped trying to meet that expectation.
I’m thankful to have been his colleague and his friend, and I miss him already.

How can this be? I was just raving with dear ‘ol Es a couple of weeks back about his move to Cremorne from Avalon, where he used to live just along the road from us.
Mary and I used to walk along Cabarita and often bump into him for a chat…and a chat…and a chat. All of you who knew him know there was NEVER a short chat with Es.

How fortunate I feel to have travelled with Esben. A good hearted, honourable man who loved people and they loved him back.
He took you unexpected places and laughed at all your bad jokes, and never gave up on you.
We edited, sang, smoked and drove long distances in strange cars, and managed to create things along the way.
Strange and wonderful nights with Hayden and Richard at Smart Street, trying to make the whole thing work.
He’d ring you with a slight guardedness in his voice, because he knew he was going to ask you to go somewhere new and wasn’t sure how you’d take it.

I was fourteen when i met him at an open call for a TV show called Crash Zone, i got kicked out of the process on the second or third call back, i sat outside the building and cried, Esben came and hugged me and told me that it wasn’t the end of the world and that he would cast me in a guest role on the show, two months later true to his word he gave me my first job, we then worked on Round The Twist together and so began my adult life.
Working with Esben was my acting school. He nurtured my abilities and encouraged me constantly. I would not have had all the amazing experiences in my life without Esben as the catalyst. A beautiful and gentle man and a truly funny fucker. Thank you my friend.

So sad to hear of Esben’s passing. I had the privilege of working with him both as an actor and director. The first time was when i was 13 and he played a crazy film director making his doomed masterpiece and then ten years later on a cop show in melbourne. I have clear memories of this young blonde-headed dynamo so full of life and dreams and totally focused ambitions. I think in the end he paid a very high price for his creativity and was never admitted to the inner circle of the club- he was one of the many creative outsiders who was never really given the full go he so richly deserved. For some strange reason Esben asked me to audition for the lead role in ‘Stanley’. His first instruction was for me to pretend I was a woman. After one sentence I was stopped by his irrepressible cackle. My acting career was over in the most delightful way.

In the last few weeks Esben and I would pass each other on the track between Clovelly and Bondi. It was very early. The sun was not up, but the morning was still beautiful. We acknowledged each other, said Hi , did the industry thing very briefly, but concentrated on our walk. Now he has gone, so soon.
Esben was a true pioneer. When I think about what he did in the 1970’s. For he and Haydn to have made 27 A when they did was almost miraculous.

I was thinking of a moment that showed Esben’s true character to me as an actor… I met him first on Blue Heelers with him directing and I was doing a scene where I needed to Cry. Normally in real life i don’t do too much of that so I was certainly nervous about it. I told him that and he said “don’t worry matt… just trust me we’ll get it out… ” As I sat in my spot waiting for his great advice and the fear to go away his advice became so very clear and something I will never forget. The scene started, I felt like he forgot to speak to me about it then I heard his advice loud and clear…. he said “ACTION”. After it he smiled and said “works every time, good job – LETS MOVE ON”. That was it! I understood way back then that sometimes just knowing that he was expecting the best work from you was enough to give it to him”. For those that knew him well, smile.. for those that worked with him, feel lucky…. and for those that didn’t know him or didn’t work with him, realize that you missed a moment in your own lifetime that you would have grown from.. My thought will be with the friends and family tomorrow.. for me, i’ll have a beer and tell my kids what an honest, hard working bloke he was and a loss to this industry. Esben, in regard to our conversation a week ago, i’ll do what was asked!

Esben was one of the actors, I was the editor, we bumped into each other poolside, on location in Wilpena Pound. He liked what he saw on screen, and asked me to cut his next directing gig – kids TV. That was the beginning of a decade of working together in small, dark rooms – having fun and making history.
When I finally got the opportunity to direct, Esben was there as series director. He suggested I direct one day from his block – to get my feet wet. By lunchtime I was 2 hours down. He found me at lunch, sitting alone, depressed about how badly it was going. I wondered what I could do to stop the day turning to shit, and his advice was simple…. “the director needs to be the energy that drives the shoot, that fires up the actors and the crew, that makes it all happen”. Sadly, I remember thinking it seemed like pretty useless advice at the time, but it did coax me out of my despair and the day finished up not too badly.
Energy was something that Esben was all about. The countless times, after the clapper, when I’d hear the off-camera voice cry, “…and….with energy….ACTION!”. The weeks upon weeks of fine cutting, looking for rhythm, finding pace, creating energy. He was a walking fusion reactor…. a white dwarf…. a supernova.
None of us will be around when our sun finally goes dark, and it is tragic that we have all witnessed Esben’s flame extinguish so soon. But at least we can be grateful that our lives were touched by his warmth, his light and his energy.

Yesterday, with hundreds of others I attended Esben’s funeral. Yes, there was grief in the room, but most importantly was the overwhelming feeling of love for this extraordinary man. We shared an editing room together over forty years ago at the Commonwealth Film Unit when Esben was just starting out.
I remember him as a talented, vibrant , committed filmmaker with a wonderful, offbeat sense of humour.

I’m just a fan from the state of Iowa, and I delighted in his performances in “Round the Twist,” watching UK DVD releases on a region-free player. Australian companies need to make Australian films and series more available to audiences worldwide–including in Australia! There are all of these series that are never released at all, or are only partially released. (Am I ever going to get to see all of “The Wayne Manifesto”???) It would be great to easily see the work of Storm and other filmmakers.
How are people going to see and appreciate all of the great things created in Australia? Perhaps companies should at least release things to Netflix so at least there’s that revenue stream going and the series aren’t sitting there mouldering and producing zero revenue before whatever master copies go to rack and ruin.

Still shocked and sad about Esben no longer being with us. I have many memories of Esben – as a local Bondi friend, an inspiring filmmaker, a loving partner to Pam and then to Lisa and a great dad to Buster and Greta, – someone who ate up life. One strong memory I have is when both our sons were playing in the same under 6 years “Newport Tigers” AFL team. I loved seeing Esben and LIsa each Saturday and I’m sure Esben and I were having the best sidelines conversation going down each week. One Saturday I remember learning something Esben said he’d been teaching Buster the night before – that to kick a field goal and get it through the posts you had to focus, not on the space just between the posts but on a point further through the posts. A great analogy for how to take aim in life. I was truly blessed to have had Esben as a friend.
