Instagram rolls out democracy sausage sticker ahead of Australian federal election

Instagram is rolling out election-themed stickers – including a democracy sausage – ahead of Australia going to the polls on Saturday.

The announcement:

Instagram is launching a new way to share your democracy sausage this weekend, with new election-themed products announced for the Australian community. In collaboration with award-winning artist Tony Albert, Instagram has created four new election-themed stickers to use in Instagram Stories, to celebrate the voting process in Australia. Instagram is also launching an interactive new Story called “Aus Votes”, which will highlight posts from people you follow who use these new stickers in the lead-up to the election.

Available in Australia from Thursday 16th May through Election Day (Saturday 18th May), the four stickers have been developed with acclaimed artist Tony Albert. Tony infused the designs with his passion for the importance of voting, the iconography of Election Day, and an Australian sense of humour.

Alongside the stickers, Instagram is launching a democracy-themed Story called “Aus Votes”. Australians will be able to see voting day content from the people they follow all in one place, at the front of their Stories bar. To be featured in this multiple-author Story to your followers, you’ll simply need to share one of the election-themed stickers in an Instagram Stories post.

The new products will also enable Australians to connect with more information about voting, such as how to find their closest voting booth. By simply tapping on an election-themed sticker in someone’s post, you can click directly through to the Australian Electoral Commission’s website to find further information.

“Australians share over one million Instagram Stories every day, so we’ve added these fun features to encourage people to express themselves on Election Day and connect with valuable information from the AEC,” said John Tass-Parker, Head of Politics and Government at Instagram. “Around the world, we see voters using Instagram to engage with major civic moments and elections. Here in Australia, we’re celebrating civic engagement through a customised product, designed in collaboration with Tony Albert to bring a uniquely Aussie flavour.”

“I’m thrilled to collaborate with Instagram to create something unique for all Australians,” said artist Tony Albert. “The Federal Election is a time for all Australians to come together and have their voices heard, and these stickers represent an opportunity to share that experience together. Instagram is an important platform to express myself as an artist and connect with people in my community. I wanted the stickers to carry an important message about the power of the individual voice, while being fun and engaging for everyone to use.”

Similar products have been rolled out for recent elections in the United States, Indonesia, Brazil, and India. Instagram believes in the democratic process and has developed these tools to help voters across our community share their excitement during elections. At its peak during the 2018 U.S. Midterms, more than 1,000 people per minute were posting the election sticker on Instagram Stories.
