Instagram unveils age verification tests

Instagram has unveiled its new AI analysis age verification tests, where users can either upload an ID or take a video selfie to verify.

The announcement:

As part of its ongoing safety and wellbeing commitments, from today Instagram is rolling out age verification tests in Australia, ensuring users receive age appropriate content with heightened privacy measures.

As part of the rollout, Instagram has partnered with online age verification company Yoti to ensure the most efficient and effective age verification.

Yoti offers privacy preserving ways to verify age, as certified by the Age Check Certification Scheme.

The new age verification features being rolled out in Australia include:

Video Selfie: Choose to upload a video selfie to verify age. If this option is chosen, users will see instructions on screen. After the user takes a video selfie, Meta shares the image with Yoti, and nothing else. Yoti’s technology estimates age based on facial features and shares that estimate with Meta.

ID Upload: Users will still be able to upload their ID to verify their age with forms of identification like a driver’s license or ID card. Instagram will use users ID to confirm their age and help keep our community safe. Users ID’s will be stored securely on our servers and are deleted within 30 days.

Josh Machin, head of public policy, Meta Australia said: “We want young people to experience Instagram in a way that’s appropriate for their age. That’s why we’re pleased to announce the rollout of innovative new age verification tools for young Australians on Instagram.

“We’re particularly excited to be working with Yoti who are leaders in building effective technology to verify age, while putting privacy at the forefront of their work. This announcement complements our ongoing efforts to develop new ways to give teens the safest and most meaningful experience possible on Instagram.”
