‘It’s raw, honest and it hits people hard’: We go one-on-one with Greg Inglis

Appearing on the latest episode of Mumbrella’s one-on-one podcast series, NRL great and owner of Goanna Academy, Greg Inglis, reflects on his business’ journey over the past four years and how sports marketing agency Enrichd Group has supported him from the start.

Inglis started Goanna Academy, an Indigenous-owned mental health education provider, in 2020 off the back of finishing his professional rugby league career.

It is the first accredited mental health education provider in Australia by Headspace Australia, which Inglis describes as a surprising, but proud achievement.

“Not only were we the first endorsed community program by Headspace, [we’re] also the first Indigenous-owned mental health company in Australia, so that’s something I’m very proud of,” he tells podcast host, Lauren McNamara.

“I didn’t know we were going to be the first in both those areas,” he continues. “I see it as leading a way for others, and creating that path for other aspiring Indigenous corporations out there.

“The way I talk about mental health and share my story, and really make myself open, you know like Greg Inglis who used to play rugby league, well Greg Inglis is a person now, it’s just all out there, nothing’s hidden or anything.

“It’s just raw, honest and it does hit a lot of people hard.”

Enrichd Group, which was previously known as Rich Digital and recently relaunched,  has supported Goanna Academy since its inception, with CEO Brent Richardson also being on the Goanna Board.

Describing the partnership as natural, Inglis say he’s learnt a lot from Richardson, and vice versa.

“The last four years have been quite interesting, quite intriguing, and I learned a lot from him,” he explains.

“The way we collaborate and work together, like we’re in the office here and we’re sitting side-by-side, and like I keep saying, I’m learning a lot from him and he’s learning a lot from me in the community area as well.

“It’s a very authentic, natural partnership that we have, and we call bullshit on each other like all the time, and then we just move on.”

On the podcast, Inglis also discusses his time on the rugby league field, his fondest memories during his career, and whether we’ll see him return to the sport in the future.
