Jackass’ Bad Grandpa tops the Aussie box office
Comedy Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, in which Johnny Knoxville plays the part of grandpa, has topped the local box office on its opening weekend. According to figures from the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia, the Paramount-distributed film made $3.4m across 297 screens beating last week’s top earner, Thor: The Dark World, which this weekend took home $2.7 on almost twice as many screens. Tom Hank’s Captain Phillips rounded out the top three making $882,023 across 273 screens.
Australian film Backyard Ashes continues to hold a place in the top 20 films making $38,817 on four screens. Three other Australian films currently showing – Mystery Road, documentary Lygon Street: Si Parla Italiano and Tim Winton’s The Turning – were all pushed out of the box office top 20 taking around $26,000 each despite playing on markedly different numbers of screens. While Mystery Road and The Turning were showing on 27 and 17 screens respectively, Lygon Street was showing on just one. Documentary In Bob We Trust was also outside the top 20 films taking just $9,420 on five screens.
