John Laws announces plans to retire next month

Iconic Australian radio presenter John Laws has announced he intends to retire in just a matter of weeks.

Per news.com.au, Laws announced the news while responding to a listener’s email on Tuesday morning’s 2SM show who wrote that he was a long-time fan of the programme.

“You’re not going to be hearing it for long, mate,” Laws responded.

“I think it’s time for a rest.”

The 89-year-old host revealed that he will “probably” call time on his 71-year career at the start of November: “I don’t want to be greedy,” he said. “I’ve had 71 fantastic years… and loved almost every minute of it.”

He continued: “I’m not going to go away and then come back again and say, ‘Oh, it was all a mistake.’ It may well be a mistake, but there’ll be no return. That’s it.”

After starting on 2UE in 1957, Laws retired in 2007, only to return to the airwaves in 2011 at 2SM, where he has worked ever since.

Mumbrella has contacted 2SM for comment.
