Jon Steel to retire from WPP AUNZ board and executive life

WPP planning guru Jon Steel will retire from the WPP AUNZ board at the end of the year.

Steel has held his position as a nominee director of WPP AUNZ since 2016, and has been WPP’s global group planning director for the last 17 years.

The announcement follows his decision to retire from his role as group planning director and executive life.

Steel began his career in London’s Boase Massimi Pollitt, before moving to San Francisco where he held the role of director of planning at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners for ten years.

When he returned back to the UK, Sir Martin Sorrell hired Steel as group planning director for WPP. In 2009, he relocated to Perth, where he worked for WPP both globally and locally in the AUNZ region.

He joined the local board in 2016, around the time of the merger between STW and WPP to form WPP AUNZ.

WPP AUNZ chairman Robert Mactier said: “Jon joined the board at the time of our merger with the WPP businesses in April 2016.

“Drawing on his wealth of industry experience in the marketing and communications industry, notably as group planning director for WPP plc and his role in leading the highly regarded WPP Fellowship programme, Jon has provided valuable insight, challenge and council to our board and management.

“His contribution will be missed but we wish him every enjoyment in his well deserved pending retirement.”

Steel said: “I have enjoyed my time on the WPP AUNZ board and will continue to take a keen interest in the company, as both a friend and a shareholder. I wish the board, executive leadership and employees of WPP AUNZ all the best for continued success.”
