Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle knocks Star Wars off top spot at weekend box office

The second instalment in the Jumanji franchise, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, knocked Star Wars: The Last Jedi off the weekend box office throne.

The follow up of the original Jumanji film, which was released in 1995 starring Robin Williams, made $9.222m on its first weekend, according to the Motion Pictures Distributors Association of Australia report. Since its premiere, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has collected almost $16m.

The latest iteration of the film sees four teenagers get sucked into the game and become adult avatars (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan), who must complete the game to return to the real world.

In second place and making an additional $6.182m across 597 screens last weekend was Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film’s opening weekend was the second-biggest of all time with more than $20m in earnings. It has now made $45.495m since its debut.

Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron’s new film The Greatest Showman entered the weekend box office in third place, with $4.220m made over the weekend. Since its premiere on December 26, it has made $6.814m.

New Disney film Coco made $1.685m in its first weekend at box office while Ferdinand came in fifth place making $1.420m.
