Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson have taken out the Best on Air Team (Metro FM) gong at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards for the fifth time.

It is the first time the duo have won the award since moving to KiisFM Sydney in 2014, having previously won the top gong in 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2013 for their 2DayFM breakfast show. They also won the Best Promotion for Give Back Wedding which saw a struggling Sydney couple helped to have the wedding of their dreams, including a performance from Ed Sheeran.

3AW’s top rating breakfast team Ross Stevenson and John Burns won Best On-Air Team (Metro AM) with the duo topping the last 108 Melbourne radio ratings.

For the fourth year running the Best Current Affairs Presenter award went to 3AW’s Neil Mitchell while 2GB’s drive host Ben Fordham was named Best Talk Presenter for the second year in a row.

Paul Gallen, captain of the NSW Blues and Cronulla Sharks, was awarded Best Newcomer for his appearances on TripleM.

Nova’s drive team, Kate, Tim & Marty (Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell & Marty Sheargold, Nova Network, Nova Entertainment) won Best Networked Program, with Blackwell also winning Best Music or Entertainment Presenter.

WSFM’s Brendan Jones and Amanada Keller had to settle for Best Syndicated Program for their My Generation show despite the breakfast duo regularly beating ARN stablemates Kyle & Jackie O in the breakfast battle in Sydney this year.

Nova Sydney’s breakfast hosts Fitzy and Wippa (Ryan Fitzgerald and Michael Wipfli) were also on the rostrum winning Best Community Service Project for the Barry the Parody Bear promotion, creating a toy bear which performed five of their song parodies, giving proceeds to charity Little Wings.

Winners in other major awards announced were:

  • Best News Presenter FM – Ron Wilson (smoothfm, Nova Entertainment)
  • Best News Presenter AM – Anne Stone (FIVEaa, Nova Entertainment)
  • Best Sports Presenter – Tim Lane (3AW, Macquarie Radio Network)
  • Best Musical Special – Richard Wilkins & Michael Buble (smoothfm, Nova Entertainment)
  • Best DAB+ Digital Radio Format – Triple M Modern Rock Digital ( Southern Cross Austereo)

Radio veteran and award winning journalist Jeremy Cordeaux was inducted into the Commercial Radio Hall of Fame. The Fiveaa afternoons host has had a career spanning 50 years across radio, TV and print, starting in radio as an office boy and moving on air as a presenter, then into management as a programme manager, managing director and owner of three successful radio stations.

Commercial Radio Australia chief executive officer Ms Joan Warner said: “Congratulations to the recipients of these awards, who provide millions of listeners throughout the country with engaging content.”

The awards this year were held at the Gold Coast Entertainment Centre and compered by actor and comedian Stephen Curry.
