LG Australia channels spirit of French arthouse cinema to plug TV launch

LG Australia is attempting to capture the colours of its latest television product with a short, Nouvelle Vague-style film about a relationship’s end.

Primarily made for the LG’s OLED TV’s launch event, the film will be promoted across social media, but not television.

The Korean electronics giant’s three-minute commercial ‘The Darkest Light’ tells the story of a woman looking back over the moments of her former relationship, contemplating the small details that led to its demise.

Created by agency Background CC and production house Sixty40, the film is aimed at promoting the LG OLED TV’s colour “richness” and “intensity” usually reserved for cinema screens.

Tim Kindler: ‘A standard TVC wasn’t going to cut it.’

Starring Australian actors Alex Stamell and Andrew Lindqvist, the film charts the couple’s relationship across a number of heavily-saturated backdrops, ultimately ending in the woman’s heartbreak.

Adding to the commercial’s arthouse cinema vibe is the film’s voiceover, which is read by French actress Marine Lechene.

The film concludes with the woman alone in a railway tunnel as Lechene’s husky voiceover recounts: “Like a familiar stranger we meet in years to come. Our memories remind us to pay attention to the minutiae, and detail in these, fleeting, moments.”

Sixty40’s Tim Kindler, who wrote and directed the film, said: “To demonstrate the superiority of its screens, LG recognised a standard TVC wasn’t going to cut it.

“Instead, I was briefed to create a film built around intense colours, blacks, contrasts and sound beds. It was exciting to get the opportunity to create a film, which due to the 4K technology, I knew would be delivered in the way it was intended.”

LG Australia home entertainment marketing manager Tony Brown added: “Each year, LG’s launch events set out to showcase the latest, cutting-edge technologies that the company has to offer. While this year was no different, we wanted to add a new element to the launch event.

“By engaging some of Australia’s freshest creative talent from various creative disciplines and giving them, in essence, a blank brief, we encouraged them to create a film to demonstrate how incredible our screens really are. We were thrilled to launch The Darkest Light by Tim Kindler as part of this showcase.”
