Lindy Chamberlain: 30 years on, the media is still getting its facts wrong

Lindy Chamberlain, the woman who was jailed over the disappearance of her baby near Uluru, has used the 30th anniversary of the tragedy to issue an open letter calling for changes to the libel laws and accusing the media of continuing to get its facts wrong.

Azaria Chamberlain disappeared during the 1980 camping trip. Lindy Chamberlain was initially jailed for life, before an item of clothing was found near a dingo lair leading to her being released.

In her letter today, issued on her behalf by the Harry M Miller Group, Chamberlain said that the media was still getting its facts wrong, and failing to correct errors. She said:

“In the last couple of weeks I discover I apparently did twice the amount of time in prison that I actually did, in Berrimah Prison no less, despite it being quite obvious that I was in Darwin Prison and Berrimah was only the suburb. Berrima Gaol is in NSW.  When the truth is dealt with this way, subtly leaving a word out here and changing one there, then it goes into the archives unchallenged because someone else thinks it is too small to matter and another mistake is let slide.”
