Macca’s doco ‘The Founder’ debuts at #2 at weekend box office; Fantastic Beasts reigns supreme

The Founder, a biographical drama about how fast food chain McDonald’s was created, achieved second spot on its first weekend at box office, taking in $877,513.

Opening on November 24, the film is based on the true story of Ray Kroc (played by Michael Keaton) who bought burger stores from Mac and Dick McDonald to create one of the world’s largest fast food empires.

While the results were strong for its first weekend, The Founder was not able to top JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them secured the top spot at the weekend box office for the second consecutive week, achieving $5.449m over the weekend.

Since its premiere on November 17, the British fantasy film has achieved a total $18.145m.

Also at the weekend box office, Cinema Live’s André  Rieu: Christmas with André raked in $1.088m ahead of The Founder. The achievement was made from two screenings across 130 cinemas in Australia.

Arrival remained in third place over the weekend, the sci-film adding $780,491 to its earning, making a total of $1.164m since its release.

In fourth spot, Disney’s Doctor Strange drew $727,108 at the weekend box office. The film has earned a total of $12.086m, achieving $6.424m in its first weekend alone.

Bad Santa 2 premiered at weekend box office in fifth place, earning $589,641.

The American black comedy / crime film featuring Billy Bob Thornton tells the story of Willie and his sidekick Marcus as they rob a charity at Christmas.
