Cate BlancettAction movie Mad Max: Fury Road was named the best Australian film of the year while Seven’s Peter Allen miniseries Not The Boy Next Door dominated the TV categories at the AACTA awards last night.

A tearful Cate Blanchett also accepted one of Australian acting’s highest awards last night being awarded the Longford Lyell Award for outstanding contribution.

Blanchett received tributes from some of the world’s biggest names in film, including Martin Scorsese, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Robert Redford, Ridley Scott and Ron Howard and made an impassioned call for more Australian actors on screen.

Blanchett told the room that more Australian actors should be cast.

“We should be bloody proud of it [the local industry], we don’t need to go to another country,” said Blanchett.

“Because we just get on and do stuff, female achievement gets swept under the carpet, so it’s extraordinary to achieve this. It’s not a quota … it needs to be fought for.”

Mad Max won Best Film and Best Director, while Seven’s Peter Allen won in five categories including best miniseries, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Joel Jackson, Best Supporting Actor forKy Baldwin and Best Supporting Actress for Sigrid Thornton.

Meanwhile the Byron Kennedy Award celebrating outstanding creative enterprise within the film and television industries went to Australian cinematographer Adam Arkapaw who best known for his work on the television series Top of the Lake and True Detective.
