Marley Spoon appoints Kate Whitney as chief marketing and growth officer

Meal delivery service Marley Spoon has appointed Kate Whitney as its new chief marketing and growth officer for Australia.

Whitney is returning to Australia after spending two-and-a-half years as the director of digital at Pernod Ricard USA. She was previously global digital director for the brand in Australia.

Between 2011 and 2014 Whitney was the general manager of marketing: CRM and direct marketing at David Jones, and prior to that she spent five years as head of brand and retail marketing at Foxtel.

In her new role, Whitney will also be overseeing marketing efforts for Marley Spoon’s alternative budget service Dinnerly, and managing Marley Spoon’s partnership with Woolworths.

Whitney said she was keen to work in a new category with so much potential.

“In Marley Spoon, I saw three simple, killer benefits in one delightful product: convenience, low waste, and wellness,” she said.

“I’ve never worked in a category that is so new and full of potential, that answers so many consumer needs at a period of phenomenal growth. Subscription services are becoming the new norm, which makes sense; Once you love a brand, and you trust that brand to take a problem away, you’ll continue to come back again and again.

“The meal-kit model reflects the changing consumer habits, but what has really impressed me about Marley Spoon is how they’ve continued to evolve their offering to meet the demands of their customers, with high-quality vegan and vegetarian options and meals that meet the growing demand of dinner being fast, healthy and delicious. There’s never been a better time to try these products, and if this demand grows, it’s only going to get better.”

Rolf Weber, Marley Spoon Australia MD and co-founder, said: “Kate joining the local team is an enormous coup for Marley Spoon.

“Her experience of combining data-driven marketing with a consumer, subscription model is almost catered to the meal kit sector, so to have her here to lead our team in Australia is incredibly exciting. Her insight and leadership are going to be invaluable as Marley Spoon prepares for one of our biggest years yet.”

Whitney’s appointment follows the departure of Marley Spoon co-founder and managing director of marketing, Dave Malcolm, in September 2019.

Marley Spoon recently launched its first campaign for the year, and its first-ever campaign for Dinnerly.

Whitney will begin her role on February 3.
