Media agencies appoint social media lead
Mediabrands – which includes media agencies Initiative and Universal McCann – has appointed ZenithOptimedia’s Marie Sornin to head up its social media efforts.
The announcement:
Mediabrands Puts Marie Sornin in Charge of Social Media
August 13, 2010: One of the media industry’s most respected digital media experts is joining Mediabrands Australia to lead the group’s rapidly expanding social media engagement across its businesses.
Mediabrands executive chairman Henry Tajer said Marie Sornin would be joining Mediabrands in October to lead social media development and to help set the stage for the group’s next foray into social media that will be announced in the coming months.
Sornin is currently digital strategist at Zenith Optimedia working on clients such as Qantas, Nestle, 20th Century Fox and News Digital Media. “Marie is truly an impactful, creative thinker across all digital media and has obsessive knowledge of the evolving world of digital consumers,” said Tajer. “She has also been outstanding in key areas of staff training and development, as well as seamless integration and leadership of digital communications into broader client assignments.”
Tajer said that Sornin’s appointment to Mediabrands recognised how important social media is to the communications mix. “It’s the combination of social and media that together make this medium so naturally interesting for people that our clients must be in there with clear strategies and executions,” he said.
Sornin commented: “The diversity of the Mediabrands business in Australia is a terrific platform for the development of social media campaigns and I am looking forward to leading the social media teams and their impact on clients’ businesses.”
Her work within Mediabrands will be on businesses including media agencies Initiative and UM, as well as search and social media agency Reprise and branded entertainment company Ensemble. She will be starting work with Mediabrands in October.

It doesn’t take much to be in charge of social media at a media agency, does it?
I’ve just looked her up online. She follows 100 people on Twitter and has written 4 blog posts since last September.
She might be “one of the media industry’s most respected digital media experts”, but according to who?
Are clients going to be rinsed for this deep expertise?

@Bonobo – It does not take much at all to gather a large following on Twitter. Also writing blog posts sure you can make one a week, but in reality people are too busy with actual work they don’t have time to sit around creating blog post after blog post, unless its your job i.e Mumbrella.
I think to be successful in social media you need to work with big brands, you need a proven track record, you need to know all the social media monitoring software Radian6/ Buzz Metrics ect ect
It is really hard to comment on some one if they are successful or not with out seeing their CV now is it!!!
