Melbourne radio ratings: Smooth overtakes Gold to take FM ratings win

Nova Entertainment’s Smooth FM has become the number one FM radio station in Melbourne for survey five as it saw an increase of 1.3 ratings points to 10.4%.

For this survey period, which ran from May 27 to June 30 and July 15 to August 18, both Smooth FM and Fox FM managed to overtake Gold 104.3 in overall audience share.

Smooth FM now rules the FM dial in Melbourne

Despite falling 0.4 ratings points from the last survey, Fox FM overtook last survey’s FM ratings winner Gold 10.4 with a share of 10%.

Dropping from first to third place, Gold FM managed a 9.9% share after shedding 0.9 points.

Meanwhile, Nova jumped 0.3 points to 6.9%, while Triple M came in with 6%. Following Triple M was Kiis FM with a mere 5.4% overall audience share.

With the inclusion of the AM stations, 3AW was once again the winner overall with 13.2% despite losing 0.6 ratings points.

Meanwhile, Macquarie Media’s newly revamped station, Macquarie Sports Radio stayed stagnant on its 0.3% share.

In the drive battle Fox FM took a hit and fell 1.2 ratings points from 13.2% to 12%. Despite this, the commercial radio station still managed to hold its title as the most popular FM drive show thanks to its programs with Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little, followed by David Hughes and Kate Langbroek.

Coming in behind Fox FM was Gold FM’s Gavin Miller with a 10.2% share. Meanwhile Smooth FM’s Byron Webb jumped 2.1 rating points to 9.4%.

Meanwhile, Nova FM’s Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold managed a 7.9% share from last survey’s 7.6%. Triple M came dropped 0.6 points to 5.2%.

Overall, 3AW managed a 9.8% share in drive.

Macquarie Sports Radio took a small hit and dropped 0.2 ratings points to a 0.9% share in drive, while ABC Melbourne managed a 6.7% share.

For the breakfast ratings Fox FM with Fifi Box, Brendan Fevola and Byron Cooke was again triumphant in the FM battle with a 0.4 point jump from 9.9% to 10.3%.

Nova’s Chrissie Swan, Sam Pang and Jonathan Brown and Smooth FM’s Jennifer Hanson and Mike Perso tied for third place with a 7.7% share. Both stations managed to improve from the last survey.

A fair way behind Fox FM was Gold FM’s Christian O’Connell who dropped 1.3 ratings points from last survey to a 7.4% share.

Meanwhile Triple M finished with a 7% audience share – down 0.5 points from last survey – ahead of Kiss FM’s 5.9% share. Kiis FM’s ‘Jase & PJ’ climbed one ratings point from last survey’s 4.9%.

3AW saw a huge 18.6% share to dominate breakfast.

Macquarie Sports Radio again saw a low audience share with a share of just 0.1%.

ABC Melbourne now has an 8.5% share in breakfast, down 0.7 points from last survey. Red Symonds fronted the program for 15 years until last year. 

In his last GfK ratings survey, Symonds had a 13.0% audience share.
