Blade Runner 2049 holds off The Mountain Between Us to retain top weekend box office takings

Following a strong opening week, Sony Pictures’ Blade Runner 2049 has achieved the top box office takings for a second weekend at the Australian weekend box office, taking a further $2.615m.

Blade Runner 2049 had a second strong week

The local success of the movie, starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, contrasts with its performance in the US, where takings for Blade Runner 2049 have been disappointing.

Meanwhile, Kate Winslet and Idris Elba’s The Mountain Between Us opened with takings of $1.716m across 288 screens.

Also on its opening weekend was Universal’s slasher film Happy Death Day, which ranked in third place after taking $1.422m across 262 screens.

Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle fell to fourth place with weekend takings of $1.105m.

Kids’ films saw a drop off across the board after the school holidays, with the Emoji Movie and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie both dropping two slots after taking $449,807 and $408,210 respectively.

Warner Brothers’ The Lego Ninjago Movie fell three places to ninth place after taking $252,504 across 285 screens.

IT remained in the top ten six weeks after it first premiered, finishing seventh after taking $357,347 across 226 screens. Since its premiere, the Steven King-inspired horror has grossed a total of $23,308,463 in Australian cinemas.

Flatliners continued to live up to its name after falling to 11th place and taking just $216,000 over the weekend.
