MTR host Steve Price – We’ll be fresher and funnier than our radio rivals
Melbourne Talk Radio hit the airwaves this morning, with front man Steve Price taking an immediate swipe at MTR’s rivals.
In the opening moments of the station, he talked up the mid-morning show presented by Steve Vizard, describing it as “Melbourne’s most anticipated new radio show in years”.
Price said of Vizard: “His radio show will be fresh and it will be funny and it will be quirky – not a description you would apply to anything on air in Melbourne at the moment.”
Price also predicted that show regular Sam Newman – best known for his controversial role on Nine’s AFL edition of the Footy Show – will “probably get us into trouble”.
MTR is seeking to take on established Melbourne talk behemoth 3AW. The new station is a joint venture between Macquarie Radio Network and Pacific Star Network.
I think Steve has quickly forgotten some recent history. Very few radio listeners wanted to hear him on 2UE. I think he ranked about 5th in his time slot. He’s hoping that no one remembers how boring and depressing he has become since leaving 3AW. Give me a break Steve.

Surely “Melbourne’s most anticipated new radio show in years” should running head to head against 3AW’s Ross & John.
It’s great that there is finally commercial Talk-back competition in Melbourne. Unfortunately I think Steve Price is too Right Wing to attract the masses away from 3AW in Breakfast.
Hopefully he gains some audience from ABC, then it is a good story for commercial radio a whole.
Lets just hope Macquarie is prepared to stick with the investment long term if the first few survey’s don’t look the best.

At last an alternative to 3aw . I think they ( 3aw ) have some serious competition.
Nice to hear you again Steve, welcome home.

Doesn’t anyone remember that it was only a few years ago that the last “serious competition to 3AW” failed? 3AK anyone? I think they had Jeff Kennett doing Drive from memory.

Well, I listened and thought Price was woeful, not a patch on Ross and John. Andrew Bolt is a good columnist and blogger, but half an hour of the Dutchman made it damn clear he is no broadcaster. Vizzer was OK, but Mitchell was better on the day.
Funny thing is, MTR has done Fairfax a big favour. Age Radio, and its on air talent relied heavily on regular guests from the Hun. Now they’re mostly gone to MTR, which leaves 3AW free to promote its own newspaper.
Big question: Does the Age have anyone except Sly who will resonate with 3AW “middle Melbourne” audience?
Hmm. If it was 3CR, you bet. But AW? Maybe they should use this as an opportunity to refocus their paper.
But what am I saying! That would require nous, which Don Churchill and McCarthy don’t have a gram of.

What you can’t tell from that pic is that Price is broadcasting standing up.

Amazing how Vizard has the nerve to even front up to a microphone after his past controversies. AND all those years we watched his late night show thinking he was such an innovator and it was a direct copy of David Letterman. His audience will be the same lovers of Peter Garret, Christine Nixon, Krudd, Madden, and so on. Best of luck – I won’t be listening and I admired him once.

Thanks for the promotional cake delivered to our office MTR…except the pictures of all your presenters looks like a police line up of “Melbourne’s Turkeys and Right Wing Ranters”. I have so many clients that want to be associated with that lot (not).

I never listened to 3mp because of its poor reception. I tried tuning in today but 1377 is still barely audible at my work; marginally better in my car. Has this been identified as a problem?
Good luck

MTR has hit the ground running. Clearly Steve Price has done his homework and assembled the people and resources to compete successfully in the Melbourne market . I’m pretty bored with the left wing / right wing analysis. That’s for people with only two concepts in their head -Is it good radio -yes or no? After only a week the answer is clearly Yes. MTR will survive and and it will grow. I’d suggest Chris Smith is the only odd one out. His unapologetically Sydney style doesn’t work for me. Nevertheless all the best MTR!
