GruenTransfer is a great piece of television.
But it’s not a great show for advertising.
John Casimir suggests it’s helped to breakdown the wider community’s negative perceptions of advertising and ad people.
I believe it has achieved the opposite and only cemented them.
The agency challenge briefs are designed for entertainment and the never-ending joke responses show agencies are only happy to oblige.
Most serious marketers [certainly the ones I work with] enjoy Gruen as entertainment, but see it as having little relevance to the advertising and marketing industry.
I congratulate the producers of Gruen for making me laugh for 30 minutes a week. I genuinely look forward to agencies making fools of themselves and another unsubstantiated Todd ‘fact’, but John, please don’t suggest it’s any more than that.

@Anonymous – so what you are saying is that it is a media / advertising / marketing equivalent of Top Gear?
I am not interested in cars, yet I find Top Gear very entertaining…
H’mmmm – idea’s…

6:13 @Anonymous here.
What I’m saying is simply this:
The lightweight nature of the show, the silly manner issues are addressed, the constant kiddie-joke responses to the agency challenges and panellists chosen for their ability to entertain rather than educate, don’t breakdown negative advertising stereotypes, they confirm them.
But as entertainment I think its great.
