Mumbrella Publish’s full program is out, including leaders from Are Media, The Conversation and The Brag Media

Mumbrella Publish has unveiled its full program for 2022, ahead of its return to the stage after a three-year hiatus. The event will bring together industry leaders including those from Are Media, The Brag Media, Broadsheet and The Conversation.

Are Media CEO Jane Huxley

In an in-depth fireside chat, Are Media CEO Jane Huxley will discuss the evolution of the Australian publishing landscape. Helming the country’s largest content company for women, Huxley will share insights on why Are Media is making moves in e-commerce, investing in data to support profitable business models, and building an inclusive and thriving culture that attracts and retains talent.

L-R: Luke Girgis, Jake Challenor and Poppy Reid

Turning to music publishing, CEO of The Brag Media Luke Girgis will chat alongside Jake Challenor, executive editor B2B and print of The Brag Media, and Poppy Reid, editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone. With a pandemic-ravaged print media industry, The Brag faced many challenges when it decided to relaunch the Rolling Stone masthead in Australia. Join the publishing leaders in this session for a candid talk about how to reinvent a classic title for a brand new audience.

The conference will also look into the publishing activism realm, as the audience is joined by a panel of speakers behind the #WaitingOnZuck initiative. Launched in March this year, the movement saw more than 50 independent publishers put on a 24-hour news freeze. Examining the infamous media bargaining code and the negotiation process that has been described as a ‘three-way tug-of-war’ between the government, the digital platforms and the news media, the panel will provide an overview of their dilemma, discuss how things have changed – or not – since launching the #WaitingOnZuck campaign, and what needs to be done to ensure the vitality and variety of Australia’s news and media industry.

The conference will take place on 31 August at Amora Hotel Jamison, Sydney. The Publish Awards will be held the day after, on 1 September at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf.
