Mumbrella360 recap: ‘I like to think of myself as the TV guy’ – David Gyngell
In the first of a four part series, we recap the highlights from Nine CEO David Gyngell’s rare public appearance at Mumbrella360 earlier this month.
During an onstage appearance with Group M chairman John Steedman, Gyngell discussed:
- Nine’s retention of the cricket rights and the extension of sport to all digital platforms;
- His plans to boost Nine’s local content;
- His leadership style – “being passionate and emotional about your product is the most important thing”;
- “I do worry about Channel Nine 24/7. It’s been part of my life for my whole life;
- Being born to be boss of Nine “I’m not a career CEO – if I don;t do this, I don’t do much else. I’m not a digital guy, I’m not a newspaper guy. I like to think of myself as the TV guy.”;
- Beating Nine’s “light touch insolvency” : “Embarrassments are not what you put your staff through.”;
- Managing from the ground up. The Kerry Packer way: “Back ’em when it’s tough, slap ’em when they’re going good.”;
- The “blokey culture crap”
