Mumbrellacast: A cashed up AFL, a new Clemenger BBDO Australia, and Cartology’s Mike Tyquin

On this week's Mumbrellacast, Kalila Welch and Andrew Banks join host, Calum Jaspan to discuss two major bits of news in the media and marketing industry, with the AFL securing a record $4.5 billion broadcast deal, and a number of changes at Clemenger Group, which sees a new Clemenger BBDO Australia agency emerge. Then, Cartology's Mike Tyquin joins the podcast to discuss the company's rapid growth and the booming retail media sector.

The AFL and its existing broadcast partners, Seven and Foxtel have secured a future together, signing a seven-year $4.5 billion extension running until 2031. The deal goes through the finer details of the deal, how it shapes the future for each of the three entities, its wider implications, and how a last-minute dash from Nine and a mega offer from Paramount/Ten might have hamstrung future deals for the FTA winner, Seven.

Then, after years of talk around a potential coming together, Clemenger Group has scrapped its Melbourne and Sydney brands to create a unified Clemenger BBDO Australia agency, under the watch of Digitas UK CEO, Dani Bassil. Bassil will return to Australia after a two-decade stint overseas, as Melbourne CEO, Jim Gall departs, resigning from his post. The team discusses the context behind the deal, and where things may go from here.

Banksy also gives an insight into the often-overlooked industry in Perth after a week of getting to know the West Australian market, following a long read over the weekend-gone.

Finally, three years after its launch, Mike Tyquin, managing director of Woolworths Group’s retail media arm, Cartology joins the podcast to discuss its head-of-expectations growth, which sees it now a 300-person strong company. Tyquin explains in detail the working relationship with brands and media agencies, the brief he was given to set up Cartology, the growing retail media sector, how the Shopper deal will benefit his operation, and some reflections on his old OOH stomping ground.
