Mumbrella’s sister site Thumbrella launches as McKeown joins from B&T
A sister website to Mumbrella has today been formally launched, alongside the appointment of the company’s first sales director.
Thumbrella – covering everything under the travel and hospitality umbrella – is now live.
Edited by Martin Lane, the award-winning former editor of Travel Weekly in the UK and publisher of Travel Weekly, Travel Today and Hospitality magazine in Australia, Thumbrella will provide a daily news, commentary and discussion point for the travel and hospitality industry.
Mumbrella and Thumbrella are owned by Focal Attractions. The company’s fortnightly PDF publication Backpacker Trade News will become a weekly html newsletter as part of the Thumbrella offering.
Lane said: “Backpacker Trade News has built a loyal and substantial following since it launched a year ago, but the old PDF format was holding it back. Delivering a breaking news service via legacy technology is no longer enough.
“What makes Mumbrella unique are the discussions that take place among its users, and it’s that model we’ll now be rolling out to the whole travel industry. While Thumbrella’s initial focus will be on the independent travel sector, we intend to rapidly widen our remit.”
Meanwhile, next month will see Sean McKeown join Mumbrella as sales director, working across Focal Attractions’ portfolio. McKeown is currently national advertising manager on trade title B&T.
Well done guys! Good to hear some positive news.
Congratulations 🙂
Great work, guys. It’s an impressive model.
Well done Tim, great that you’re expanding.
Although I may read other blogs, I only really trust AdNews and B&T
So which one do you work at, MKS? B&T or AdNews? It must be scary times for you guys…
Well done. Great to hear.
Great stuff guys, im inspired………in fact im gonna go and whip the ears off it.
Great idea Tim. You’re definitely on to a winner!
That’s fantastic! Will Thumbrella eventually branch out to cover other aspects of the hospitality industry e.g. restaurants, conference venues etc, or will it primarily be concerned with the tourism side of things?
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, eventually Thumbrella will widen its remit to include all aspects of the travel and hospitality industries. Watch this space!
Cheers

Woohoo…well done matey.
can you launch bumbrella to cover industries where the arse is falling out of the market?
Nice call Andrea, Yeah how many more ums can you use? Umbrella could cover English literature. Tumbrella could be either a fitness site or bar/pub one.
Looks like Tumbrella is consumer travel:
http://tumbrella.com.au
Really sorry – can’t help myself – dumbrella for, well, idiots. Will stop now.
Interesting you should suggest that, Andrea. The domain Dumbrella.com.au was registered by my friends and former colleagues at Reed Business Information shortly after Mumbrella launched.
You may say it’s for idiots, but I’d say that’s very harsh on them.
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella.
