MyPeace launches first Muslim ad to run on Australian primetime TV
Islamic group MyPeace has launched its first ad campaign on television – the first Muslim-backed campaign to run on primetime TV in Australia. The idea of the campaign is to educate non-Muslims about Islam.
The ad will run nationally on Prime from Wednesday, and on Nine and Seven from Saturday.
“This is the first time an Australian Muslim group has taken the initiative to bring Islam to the masses,” said MyPeace founder Diaa Mohamed. “We hope this campaign provides Australians with fact and insight around Islam.”
Earlier this year, MyPeace courted controversy with a poster that read ‘Jesus – a prophet of Islam’.
Mohamed added: “With research showing that the rise of Islam is the second biggest issue facing Australian society (17%) ahead of climate change (12%) and refugees and boat people (7%), it’s evident that there’s a great divide between what people understand to be the principles of our religion and the principles in reality.”
PR around the campaign is being handled by Mango Communications.

So they no longer allow tobacco advertising on televisions… Yet religion, something that has the potential to be just as addictive and dangerous is allowed to air???

Might show my teenage kids the ‘show kindness to your parents’ part too.

I have no problems with Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus or Baptists or any other religion BUT if they can show ads regarding their religion then you better make time for ALL the other religions.
My religion is just as badly maligned as the Muslims and the Jews so how about putting a time aside so we can tell the truth about Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) or the Jewish people. And the rise of Islamic religion is only relevant when people become afraid of terrorism cos that is the only time Islam(Muslim) is discussed. They are NOT more important to the Australian Society than climate change, boat people and the Carbon Tax – those things are far more important than another religion. I don’t think you will find your program as terribly interesting as you think!

I think this is to be applauded. They are entitled to promote their point of view (and the sentiments expressed are not bad ones to live by, no matter whether you believe in omniscient beings or not) and I’m a big fan of getting Australians to understand other people’s religions.
One hopes that this will allow people of all beliefs to promote their views to a wider audience. Of note was the refusal by APN to run campaigns daring to suggest that there might not be a god – http://www.abc.net.au/news/200.....ack/220036

Nice idea, and well-intentioned. But the main issue isn’t people accepting Islam as much as our understanding of how much Islam accepts the rest of us. I imagine general tolerance of other’s beliefs is the order of the day for most of the followers of Islam, but it’s not what we see or hear (I get there’s some media bias and undue hysteria causing this btw).
What would I like to see from Islam and it’s earthly representatives, especially those in Australia? Clear and unambiguous denouncement of every vile act of terrorism carried out in the name of Islam anywhere in the world.

I agree with Rob but there is more. Considerable adversity and hardship often deliver great clarity. I will save everyone’s time here by saying Jesus is the prophet of no one
But the only son of God. There is one path to heaven and that’s through belief in Jesus.
Living in a democratic society I expect most of you to disagree with me and I applaud the right for you to do so. Just don’t say in the final moment that You haven’t heard the truth

What about us Flying Spaghetti Monster followers? We’re always underrepresented on Australian television and are very much misunderstood.

Unfortunately, their ad is like an ad saying nice things about Telstra, but everyone still knowing their customer service is shite.
This tries to portray Islam in positive light, but 99% of people if you asked them to quickly give you a 1 word resopnse to Islam would answer ‘Terrorism.’
Islam and terroism is probably one of the most effective branding exercises we’ve seen – right or wrong.
So I think to many viewers it doesn’t pass the believability test . – they will think that is not the Islam I hear about – I think an ad that acknowledged the bad views of Islam, and addressed why that is not representative of all Islam, would have worked better.
If there’s an elephant in the room, it’s better to address it .
– like Coke did after the new coke debacle
– like McDonalds is doing about their coffee
– like Mother energy drink did.
rather than just pretend its not there.

I agree that dispelling myths and educating the punters about marginalised groups of people is really important. What does worry me, however, is that the average punter may see this as a push to convert everyone in the west to the Islamic faith.

Paul arnts is making a fuss about other religion’s being able to air religious commercial’s, should in fact get their priorities in check, any person is free to put advertisement’s on television, but with the muslim advertisement’s, they are self paid for and funded, not given free to the muslim community as a free ride.
So to paul arnts, who is a latter day saints member, why dont you fork out some dollar’s out of your pocket, for your message to be told…

Calm down everyone. It’s called freedom of religion. If you don’t like it move to North Korea.

It’s interesting because I think it really portrays values more typically aligned to Christians. Too, as already mentioned, the wider community has real issues with parts of Islam – violence, treatment of women, treatment of homosexuals, gay marriage, etc – which makes the ad look misplaced and way too sugar-coated. I’d also be very interested to know how many of the Islamic community are actually volunteer lifesavers or Muslim charities that serve the wider community. That said, it’s a sweet ad and does well in winning the PR stakes.

The exact reason y this is promoted iis for people to understand that Islam DOES NOT represent terrorism!!!!!!!! This is what has been potryed by media and those who understand Islam know that terrorists are not muslim…..they claim to be one as Islam denounces terrorism. Perhaps you can go on the website and ask questions so people can respond to your questions. Maybe it will clear few misunderstandings. What a great way to iinteract.
There is nothing wrong about promoting religion. Infact people use to say that muslims are not standing up. This is the answer to them. They are standing up and showing what people wanted to hear. The are promoting peace and there is nothing wrong with it.
I believe that mormons want to promote their religion, well so be it. Same as buddist and every other religion.
As for whether Jesus is a prophet or a son of God, well that is up to the individual’s belief according to the religion they follow. The main lesson is that Jesus didnot portray hatred but showed love towards every human being regardless of their race, religion or culture ant that is exactly what we should be doing. Love one another for who we are not what we are!!!!!!!

@Levi – yes, my point (well couched it seems) was that for some reasons it’s OK for religions to promote their views, but not for atheists to promote theirs? Seems a trifle unfair, no? I’m all for religious advertising, so long as it allows the full spectrum. Banning the “There is almost certainly no god. Now stop worrying and get on with your lives” bus campaign would rather indicate this isn’t the case.

Anyway, go in peace.

I think its a great add, and a nice idea. People are curious about Islam and this add simply directs them to find their answers. If you are not curious, then ignor the add, as you would a telstra one or any other.
So be it.

@Blue – please take note that ATHEISTS have had a huge opportunity to promote their BELIEFS and views and continue to do so. such belief is the THEORY OF EVOLUTION and this does not come in the form of an add, instead it is embedded into society THROUGH the EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.
So if u want to talk of FAIRNESS, surely u cant compare an add that u have a CHOICE to watch/accept that runs for a few SECONDS to a systematic education that is FORCED for YEARS
May peace be upon you

@Hakim
Without getting into a massive argument about it… Evolution isn’t taught as a a belief system. It’s science. That’s why it belongs in school.

this is not a true representation of the religion. I find this kind of propaganda offensive and misleading. This religion is not based on 1 idea “peace”. What about the other ideologies that promote the killing and violence inflicted against other religions as there god given right.
Why don’t they promote there true side. “Eye for an eye tooth for a tooth”
