New distributor launches Australian operation

New Zealand-based Curious Distribution has launched its Australian cinema slate with Winter’s Bone, which will screen at the Sydney Film Festival this week, with release plans for spring 2010.

Curious has chosen the Sundance Jury Prize winner as its first Australian release, and it is the third title the company has acquired.

“Old distribution models and established distributors operating on high overheads mean a class of quality films are no longer getting released theatrically,” said Curious Distribution director Michael Wrenn, who also addressed the current ‘disposability’ of film creation and consumption.

The distributor is part of Curious Film, a company specialised in TVC and feature production. The distribution arm was launched in late 2009 and has already released Shifty in New Zealand. Its other title, Wah Do Dem will screen at the New Zealand Film Festival in July.
