News Limited corporate affairs chief Greg Baxter departs

Kim Williams has continued to wield the axe as the new boss of News Limited, with director of corporate communications Greg Baxter to leave the company at the end of the month after an eight year spell.

News of Baxter’s departure comes just days after the ousting of the head of the company’s magazine division. The departure of Sandra Hook, CEO of NewsLifeMedia, was announced on Friday of last week.

Williams said in a statement:

I want to acknowledge Greg’s strong management of some of the most difficult issues News has faced in recent years which have spanned a complex and demanding menu of strategic challenges. He has earned the respect of many colleagues, competitors, industry partners and other stakeholders, including the many journalists who report on what we do.

Williams also paid tribute to Baxter’s role in setting up the media coalition Australia’s Right to Know, the News Awards and pushing for changes to legislation and public policy on press freedom.

Baxter was hired by News in May 2004 by the then chairman and CEO John Hartigan, who stepped down in November.

Baxter commented:

I particularly want to thank John Hartigan, Peter Macourt [who left News in December] and our general counsel Ian Philip for giving me so many wonderful opportunities at News and for their incredible support for me, personally as well as professionally.

I am very privileged to have worked with so many great people, on such a vast array of projects and issues and to have had so much fun and job satisfaction along the way. News is a special place and I shall miss it immensely.
