News Ltd appoints Michael Robinson as its first head of video

News Ltd has appointed its first national head of video, moving Michael Robinson into the role.

Robinson spent the previous 18 months heading the company’s Newsolutions program which focused on transforming systems within the publisher’s newsrooms. His previous roles have included chief executive of the media division of News Digital Media and roles at Fairfax Media.

According to the News Ltd announcement, Robinson “will be responsible for driving and implementing video strategies across news, sport and features for News Limited’s websites, tablet and mobile offerings and will harness all editorial, commercial and technological aspects of the company’s video future.”

Robinson will report in to News Ltd’s editorial director Campbell Reid. Reid said: “Michael is one of our most experienced executives whose demonstrated passion and talent for digital journalism will ensure our video strategies are clearly articulated and expertly delivered.

“As News Limited continues its digital evolution, video presents us with significant opportunities to enhance and deepen our storytelling capabilities and in turn, offers compelling new audience and revenue channels for our company’s future.”

A similar role already exists at News Ltd’s rival Fairfax Media. It is occupied by former News of the World news editor Ricky Sutton who was appointed in December 2009.
