News programs dominate Thursday night but Ten’s Masterchef wins across the key demos

Thursday night saw Seven and Nine’s news offerings dominate OzTam’s preliminary overnight metro ratings, with Nine News and Seven News, the only programs to reach more than 1m metro viewers.

Nine News attracted 1.013m metro viewers ahead of Seven’s 1.004m, while the 6:30pm editions attracted metro audiences of 959,000 and 971,000 respectively.

Nationally, taking into account regional viewers and affiliate stations, Seven news achieved 1.661m viewers while Nine News had 1.021m.

Ten’s Masterchef was the most-watched non-news program of the night, winning across the key advertising demographics (16-39, 18-49, 25-54).

Despite its success, Masterchef slipped to 778,000 viewers from last week’s 879,000 metro viewers.

Nationally, Masterchef attracted 1.079m viewers.

The show was also ahead of competitors in its time slot, with Nine’s RBT pulling 584,000 metro viewers, and Seven’s House Rules – which did not air in Sydney and Brisbane on Wednesday – capturing 446,000 metro viewers across Sydney and Brisbane.

Nationally, RBT had an audience of 864,000.

Seven’s AFL clash between Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, which aired on 7mate in Sydney and Brisbane, and Seven’s main station across Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, captured a metro audience of 507,000.

Ten’s The Project, which had 606,000 metro viewers, was the second-most-watched program across the 16-39s and 18-49s.

The Project managed 856,000 national viewers.

For ABC, the most-watched program was its news offering, which pulled 698,000 metro viewers.

Seven won the night with an average audience share at 21.8%, ahead of Nine’s 16.6% and Ten’s 14.4%.

ABC had an average audience share of 10.8% and SBS had a share of 4.3%.
