Nine commissions new drama series, Bad Mothers, starring Jessica Marais

Nine and Screen Australia have announced a new drama series for the network, Bad Mothers, which will commence filming in October.

The Jungle production will kick off with eight episodes and star this year’s TV Week Logie Award winner for Most Popular Actress, Jessica Marais, as well as Love Chid’s Mandy McElhinney, Doctor Doctor’s Shalom Brune-Franklin and Wolf Creek’s Jessica Tovey.

Jessica Marais recently starred in Network Ten’s The Wrong Girl

The drama series is promising “dirty little secrets” hidden “behind the pristine picket fence”.

“Four very different mother’s lives will collide,” a release from Nine said. “Outsiders in a storm of suspicion and danger and when this sisterhood comes together it’s murder.”

Andy Ryan and Jo Rooney, Nine’s co-heads of drama added: “When the going gets tough, our Bad Mothers will stick together. Whether they’re juggling the highs and lows of parenthood, careers, love and even murder, Australia’s new best friends lead the way with charm, smarts, and a shameless bad attitude.”

The project’s principal production investment came form Nine, in association with Screen Australia and was financed with support from Create NSW.

Sally Caplan, head of production at Screen Australia said it was fantastic to see some of Australia’s strongest TV writers coming on board for a female-led ensemble piece.

“Writers Rachel Lang, Sarah Walker, Gavin Strawhan and Phil Lloyd have created a genuine and relatable script about the challenges of modern parenthood, with humour and heart.

“We’re particularly excited to see production company Jungle carry out their first one-hour format series, and with the track record of the writers and producers working on this project, we have no doubt Bad Mothers will be one of 2019’s must-see new series.”
