Nine nabs Telstra’s Rebecca Haagsma to newly created role of chief product officer

Nine has today appointed senior digital executive Rebecca Haagsma to the newly created role of chief product officer and will commence her role in early July 2022.

Haagsma will lead Nine’s digital product capability, encompassing product vision, strategy, management, and design, as well as data product, to further accelerate Nine’s digital growth across its television, publishing and audio businesses.

Haagsma joins Nine from Telstra, where she was on the product and technology senior leadership team and held strategy, commercial, relationship and digital product responsibilities across Telstra, including Telstra TV, Foxtel, Sport, Telstra Payphone and Outdoor Network.

Last week, Nine launched significant technology initiatives to bring brands closer than ever before to Nine’s 15 million signed-in users.

Following on from recent announcements of Nine’s Centre Of Digital Excellence (CODE) – which will underpin the company’s acceleration towards a digital transformation – the next generation of data driven insights and measurement tools have been revealed during last Thursday’s Big Ideas Store session ‘Data with a Conscience’.

Last month, Nine signed an exclusive partnership with ad-tech/martech platform, AdGreetz, to introduce digital technology to 9Now to allow brands to personalise targeted advertising to viewers.

Named ‘Dynamic Ads’, the video creative optimisation product will help marketers automatically provide more tailored messaging to 9Now’s 12 million addressable users, with adverts served to the viewer based on their viewer profile, underpinned by Australia’s largest data footprint. Nine is the first Australian media outlet to engage AdGreetz’s tech for use in BVOD.

Nine’s chief digital officer, Alex Parsons, said of the appointment: “Haagsma is an exceptional talent and brings more than 20 years’ experience in product innovation and digital media leadership to the role. In addition to her recent experiences at Telstra, Haagsma was previously with the Nine business where she was an integral part of the creation of the strategy, development and launch of 9Now.”

“We’re excited to welcome her back to the Nine family to help make product and technology a core component and differentiator in the future of Nine, and a key enabler to the ongoing and increasing success of our digital business.”

Haagsma said of her appointment: “I’m really excited about joining the Nine group in the role of chief product officer. This is an awesome leadership role, working across the whole of the business, with a fantastic team to drive even more strategic focus and accelerate the digital transformation through the delivery of amazing digital experiences.”

“I’m looking forward to bringing my leadership, and strategic product capabilities, back to the media and entertainment business, and working to drive growth and value for the business and our customers.”

In February, Nine appointed a new national sales team under Total Television, Total Audio and Total Publishing as it accelerates towards its digital future.
