Nine News Melbourne announces new deputy news director role

Nine News Melbourne has confirmed the appointment of a new deputy news director.

In an email sent to staff late on Thursday, Melbourne news director, Hugh Nailon, announced his need to “step up and help out with key elements of the broader news network”, and named producer Nathan Tanti to fill the position.

“This will put Nathan in charge of the day to day editorial and production operation of the GTV newsroom,” Nailon wrote.

“He will continue to oversee key news transformation projects, and will take on the rostering of the production desk team. Nathan has proved his leadership credentials over the last few years, from running regional news to spearheading significant technical change here at GTV and across the network. This is a big step up, but one he’s ready for, please get in behind him.”

The change will officially come into effect on Monday, December 9.

It comes just days after current Nine News reporter, Airlie Walsh, filed a human rights sex discrimination case against the company and the news that the former Nine News Queensland director launched legal action against the network after her departure last month.

At the time, it was reported that Amanda Paterson was dismissed effective immediately after 31 years with Nine and had held the news director role since 2016.

Paterson has alleged she was unlawfully terminated by director of news and current affairs, Fiona Dear, over “minor” issues unrelated to Nine’s ongoing investigation into workplace culture.
