Nine to give Little Britain a go

lou-andy-little-britainSix years after it was created, comedy sketch show Little Britain is finally to reach a commercial free-to-air audience in Australia.

The Nine Network is to air the show from next Tuesday at 10.30pm. The programme has previously been broadcast on the ABC and on subscription channel UKTV.

If the BBC-created show does find an audience with Nine, it has the benefit of already having three series in the bag, along with a further series of Little Britain USA.

Primarily the work of comedians David Walliams and Matt Lucas, it includes a cast of characters which became part of British catchphrase culture including:

  • The boganised Vicky Pollard (“Yeah, but no, but yeah, but…”)
  • Fat Fighters leader Marjorie Dawes (“Dust…”)
  • Emily Howard, the world’s least convincing transvestite (“I’m a lady…”)
  • Daffyd Thomas, the only gay in the village
  • Hypnotist Kenny Craig (“Look into my eyes, not around the eyes…”)
  • The camp Sebastian, assistant to Prime Minister Tony Head, on whom he has an unhealthy obsession
  • Wheelchair user Andy & Lou (“Want that one…”)

It also features a voiceover from former Dr Who Tom Baker.

Giving the programme a slot on the edge of prime time seems a slightly unusual move considering that it will have already been seen by a fair proportion of its target audience. However, it may be part of a strategy to start making viewers familiar with shows that could form a backbone for Nine’s long-awaited new general entertainment digital channel.
