Now Masterchef crushes The Rafters in the ratings

Masterchef last night toppled Seven’s biggest kahuna, beating Packed To The Rafters and becoming Ten’s biggest TV show of the year.

Tuesday’s 7pm episode – which saw contestant Julia eliminated – rated nearly 2.2m, according to preliminary figures from OzTam.

It’s the first time the show has done better than Packed To The Rafters, which went out at 8.30pm and still rated a respectable 1.8m.

Last night’s ratings were a two way battle between the networks, with Ten’s Talkin Bout Your Generation scoring 1.5m, and Seven’s Surf Patrol doing about the same.

Seven’s new docusoap Air Ways, following Tiger Airlines – had a moderate start, rating just over 1.2m. The network will be hopeful that next week, when Masterchef has finished, that number will build.

Despite the topicality of Nine’s Harry Potter movie (the latest one in the franchise opens this week), The Prisoner of Azkaban averaged less than a million viewers, leaving the network with a metro share of just 21.6%.

In a rare night, both Ten and Seven were above 30%. Ten won with 30.2%, to Seven’s 30%. The ABC had 12.9% and the ABC 5.4%.

Tuesday’s top TV shows:

  1. Masterchef Ten – 2.2m
  2. Packed to the Rafters Seven – 1.8m
  3. Seven News Seven – 1.6m
  4. Today Tonight Seven – 1.5m
