NT government turns off tap to problem drinkers

The Northern Territory government has launched a campaign to support of its ‘Enough is Enough’ policy on problem drinking, which takes effect on July 1. The campaign, created by Darwin agency Sprout, aims to inform the public about ID scanners that will be installed in take-away liquor stores to weed out booze buyers on the banned drinkers register.

“The advertising campaign has a simple message – from July 1, you must have existing ID to buy takeaway alcohol anywhere in the Territory,” said Minister for Alcohol Policy, Delia Lawrie. “The system allows us to target the problem drinker; if you are not on the Banned Drinkers Register, you can buy your alcohol as normal.”

Alcohol-related violence costs the Nothern Territory government $640m a year.
