OMD’s specialist diversity unit appoints new national director

OMD has promoted Katy Eng as its first national director of OMD Diverse, its specialist business unit, dedicated to furthering and encouraging diversity and inclusion at the agency.

Eng has been with OMD for nine years, and is currently OMD Create’s director of content marketing. She commenced the role in August and reports into Thomas Hutley, national head of Create, OMD Australia.

She will continue her existing duties, while also broadening her remit to lead the OMD Diverse team across Australia, and driving multicultural media solutions. She will also be responsible for “driving new business, client/agency education and implementing OMD’s D&I charter.

Eng said: “I first called Australia home ten years ago, joining six million other Australians who were born overseas, so I understand first-hand how diverse and special this country is. 20% of Australians speak a language other than English at home and importantly, we are home to the world’s oldest continuous culture. I believe we have a real duty to navigate our agency and clients through the nuances of culture, tradition and language to make each and every Australian feel seen, heard and understood.”

OMD Diverse launched in 2014, with a focus on “reaching and engaging with culturally and linguistically diverse people, the LGBTQI community, people living with vision or hearing impairments, and First Nations communities”.

It works with a number of OMD’s clients, which include McDonald’s, Telstra, Coles, NSW Government, Victorian Government and Estée Lauder Companies. OMD Diverse “recognises the nuances surrounding the media consumption and habits of multicultural audiences including their attitudes, beliefs and behaviours”.

It works on leading multicultural strategy, planning and buying, in addition to language translation, creative and production services across radio, audio visual, advertorial, events and influencer marketing.

Thomas Hutley, national head of create, OMD Australia added: “Over the past 12 months, Katy has taken an active role in driving agency and client education on our Diverse product and the importance of engaging these key target audiences in a relevant and authentic way. This has coincided with a period of rapid growth for OMD Diverse and is testament to Katy’s dedication, passion and client service. I have no doubt we can be supporting more clients in driving the diversity and inclusion agenda and I look forward to seeing Katy lead this across OMD nationally.”
