One day cricket gives Nine massive win as Ten slumps without Big Bash

The tight finish to the one day international between India and Australia in the second game of the tri-series helped Channel Nine to a 31.1% audience share as 1.451m people tuned in to see James Faulkner steer the home side to victory.

Up against an assortment of repeats, re-runs and movies the first session of the match from 2pm got 991,000 viewers, while the pre-match was watched by 468,000 people.

Seven managed an audience share of 18.6% with Inside Queen Mary at 7pm its top non-news show, while Ten finished below ABC with a share of 8.2% compared to 12.2% as the absence of Big Bash cricket hurt the commercial station, with Eyewitness News at 5pm its top show.

Cricket also helped Nine to win Friday’s ratings battle as the most-watched show of the night with 1.07m viewers for the second session as Australia beat England, after 677,000 had tuned in for the afternoon giving the channel a 26.6% audience share.

A repeat of BBC drama Sherlock on ABC at 8.40pm, which had 593,000 viewers, proved more popular than Seven’s film The King’s Speech (588,000) and Ten’s movie Little Fockers, which was watched by 357,000.

Nine News was also hugely buoyed by the cricket winning the news battle with 1.341m viewers compared to Seven’s 943,000 at 6pm.

In the Asian Cup Saturday’s match between Australia and South Korea got 269,000 viewers o Fox Sports and 385,000 on ABC, while Friday’s match between Iraq and Japan was watched by 72,000.

Saturday’s Big Bash League match up between the Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars had 555,000 viewers for the second session and 459,000 for the first session, the fifth and sixth most watched shows of the night.
