Optus appoints Vodafone NZ’s Matt Williams to lead marketing after Ben White promotion

Optus’ head of marketing, Ben White, has been promoted to lead the telco’s Business and Wholesale division in a company restructure that sees marketing joined with product management and analytics.

Filling the new role of managing director for marketing and revenue will be Matt Williams who joins the company from Vodafone New Zealand.

White has been with Optus since 2006 and stepped into the marketing role with the departure of Vicki Brady

White stepped into the Optus marketing role in 2016 after Vicki Brady moved onto Telstra. From 2011 to 2013 Ben was Vice President of Marketing and Strategy for Optus Wholesale, having joined the telco in 2006 as the director of strategy and corporate development.

In his new role, White will lead Optus’ Small Business and Wholesale and Satellite teams as part of the telco’s focus on those markets.

Williams joins Optus after 12 years with Vodafone with stints in New Zealand, Greece and the UK. In his new role he will be responsible for Optus’ brand and marketing along with product management, customer value and data analytics.

Optus head of marketing, Mel Hopkins, will remain in her role and answer to Williams.

Last year Optus made cuts to its marketing team as part of a rationalisation that saw 800 jobs go along with the closure of the Virgin Mobile brand.

At the same time of the rationalisation, the telco appointed 72 and Sunny to its creative roster, an arrangement that lasted less than a year before the US-based agency was dropped.
