Pan grabs $2m on opening weekend but Everest still towers over the box office

Warner Brothers’ new Peter Pan movie starring Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried took more than $2m at the box office over the weekend on 472 screens.

However it was not enough to put Pan on top of the Australian box office, with Everest holding that position claiming $2.21m, having now earned more than $7m in just a fortnight.

Amid the school holidays Columbia Pictures’s sci-fi action comedy Pixels, starring Adam Sandler, also recorded its best result so far taking $2.1m, taking its gross over $8.2m.

Australian movie Oddball, starring Shane Jacobson, is also doing well taking $1.7m over the weekend from 293 cinema screens and now has takings of $4.5m.

Drug thriller Sicario took $1.6m on its second weekend while Maze Runner is now up to $10.4m in box office takings, but Straight Outta Compton is the highest grossing film in the top 20 with earnings of $11.3m after taking more than $600,000 on the weekend.
