Updated: Pedestrian Group names new publisher following managing editor appointment

Nine Entertainment Co.’s youth publication, Pedestrian Group, has appointed Sarah Michael as its publisher and Matthew Galea as the managing editor of Pedestrian TV.

Michael

Michael was most recently the director of audience strategy and growth at across Yahoo Australia and Southeast Asia. She worked across news, lifestyle/entertainment, sport and finance editorial teams for audience growth and assisted with branded content and affiliate commerce strategies.

She said on her appointment: “Young Australians have a diverse range of issues they care about, and the brands under Pedestrian Group cover these with intelligence, humour and passion.

“Personally, Pedestrian has been part of my media diet since it first launched and I have watched the Group build up a strong and successful portfolio of brands.”

Matt Rowley, CEO, Pedestrian Group said, “Sarah has a standout set of skills, experience and qualities that are perfect for the opportunities and challenges our brands have ahead of them. I’m thrilled to see how she will lead our talented group of editorial leaders into the next phase of Pedestrian Group.”

Galea

Additionally, Galea was most recently the senior entertainment editor of the publication. Sharing on LinkedIn, Galea said: “This will be my fifth year with the company and I’m pretty bloody pumped for this next chapter.”

The managing editor role evolved from the deputy editor position. It was previously held by Jim Malo, who now works for The Age, which is also owned by Nine.

“His passion for the brand and our readers is inspiring, and I’m excited to see him work closely with our talented team of young writers to find fresh new ways to reach our switched-on audience of young Aussies across all of Pedestrian TV’s platforms.”

Michael will commence her role in early February while Galea will commence immediately.

Last year, Pedestrian Group elevated Rachel Tikey to the newly created role of chief commercial officer, as the publishing group looks to launch new products.

Pedestrian Group launched a new Web3-focused publication, The Chainsaw, in August last year.
