Phillips ‘unhaunts’ Q Station to show the power of its lights

Phillips Lighting has turned one of the “most actively haunted sites in the country”, Manly Quarantine Station, into a holiday house and invited a couple to stay overnight.

Led by PR agency Eleven in collaboration with TBWA Sydney, Phillips used Hue and LED lighting products and props to transform the Nurses’ Quarters into a warm and inviting space.

The accompanying three-minute video shows a paranormal expert examining the space, labelling it as one of the most “actively haunted sites in the country” and stressing about the spirits in the room. These dark and chilling scenes are interspersed with footage of the unsuspecting couple eating dinner, and playing Scrabble, Twister and celebrity heads, before heading to bed.

After the couple spends the night in what the paranormal expert labeled as ‘The Demon Room’ it is revealed to them they stayed in one of the most haunted locations in Australia.

Andy DiLallo, TBWA Sydney’s chief creative officer, said in a statement: “This campaign was designed to demonstrate the effect lighting has on our mood. In the most dramatic of fashions, we plucked an everyday couple out of their everyday routine and tested our theory. Luckily they were pretty forgiving when we shed some light on the truth of their little getaway.”

The social experiment was conducted after research showed one in three (33%) of Australians feel scared in their own home and 72% are afraid of the dark.

Simon O’Donnelly, marketing manager at Phillips, added: “Our mission is to take light beyond illumination, making people safer, happier and more comfortable in their homes.”
