PR and former journalist Rod Allen dies in cliff fall
Former Fairfax journalist Rod Allen has died in a fall at Sydney’s Cockatoo island, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
According to the SMH, Allen had been camping at the island.
Allen spent 12 years with News Limited early in his career, before spending another 12 years with the Sydney Morning Herald where he eventually became managing editor for sport across both the SMH and Sun-Herald.
He left journalism for the world of PR in 2009 when he became head of media relations for Football Federation Australia. He set up his own communications consultancy Rod Allen Media which became The Rocket Group, working with FFA, the Australian Olympic Committee and the Australian Turf Club.
Incredibly sad news and deepest condolences to the family.

Sad news – BUT, it strikes me as very insular that SMH has been running this big on the front page yesterday and today. yes, these are slow news days, but it does indicate a skewed sense of ‘news’ when I would suggest many readers would not care as strongly about this as many other stories.

Dear Anonymous,
The media coverage that Rod Allen’s death has been getting has got nothing to do with slow news. Its a tragic story that impacts the lives of many people. If you did some research you’d find out what he was involved in and what he had achieved. I’m guessing its a lot more than you. Rod spent most of his working life as a journalist for News Ltd and Fairfax so for them it’s a big story when one of their own falls to their death. It is also important to the family and to friends of which Rod had many. Personally, I’ve known Rod since i was around 18. I know his parents,, I spoke to his father tonight who is devastated that he’s lost his best mate. Rod had a large circle of friends, a very successful career in journalism, sports journalism and sport itself. You may not see the significance of what Rods done in a fairly short time because you, anonymous can’t even put your name to your words plus maybe you’ve never achieved anything worth writhing about and maybe you’re worried that when your time has come there will be no newspaper coverage to mark your passing. So do us all a favour and shut up. There are a lot of people who want to grieve the passing if this man. Let his family have some time to grieve along with his friends and colleagues.

I think the phrase ” allround good bloke “sums up Rocket to a tee, although probably a gross understatement, he was a great friend and a great contributor, the world is a lesser place without him, farewell my friend.
