Kate Dundas, Director ABC Radio said “We know our listeners often move between our radio stations and so in thinking through the new RN schedule we have aimed to ensure maximum choice across our services.
“Wherever you are in Australia at any time of the day you should be able to hear a program on an ABC radio station or online that suits you.
“RN is a rich and vibrant part of that mix.
“We really want more people to discover and share its great programming,” Ms Dundas said.
Michael Mason, Acting Manager Radio National said the new schedule strengthens the station’s offering which will appeal to existing audiences and a new generation of listeners.
“We want to strengthen our role as the network for audiences who want a deeper understanding of the world, whether you’re 35 or 65,” Mr Mason said.
“RN will continue to offer quality broadcasting whether you’re tuning in or engaging online at a time that suits you through a smartphone, tablet or PC.
“The refreshed RN website also launched today makes accessing information easier and more pleasurable while reflecting the contemporary nature of the network.”
Mr Mason confirmed RN’s signature news, current affairs and analysis has been strengthened with an extended Breakfast and the new Drive program. Incoming hosts Waleed Aly and Julian Morrow have welcomed the chance to present the new live Drive program Monday to Thursday and Friday respectively at 6pm AEDT.
“A two hour show gives you the opportunity for both depth and breadth, which is really exciting,” Mr Aly said.
“It’s wonderful to have the chance to get our teeth into the day’s biggest stories wherever in the world they break, but we’ll also take the time to look at the bigger ideas and themes behind the issues.” Julian Morrow confirmed he’s looking forward to presenting RN Drive every Friday.
“It’s a formidable challenge to take over RN Drive on Fridays, but I’m confident I can undo all Waleed’s good work in just one day,” Mr Morrow said.

I listened to the replacement Arts program this morning. What trivia compared with the serious discussion we are used to on The Book Show and its predecessors. People who are interested in books and writing will be unhappy at this dereliction by the ABC. There is very little discussion of writing of all kinds any where in Australia. Surely the ABC should not be abandoning readers in this way.
If film still gets a program on radio and on TV – why not writing?
I hope Romola Koval’s great interviews have been archived by the ABC. They are national treasures.

I am unimpressed with the 5.30am Monday new time for Health Report, followed by THREE HOURS of Breakfast. Surely the Health Report should be broadcast in a more civil time.

The start of 6am to 9am programme has been very good.
Finance and political reporting asalways a high standard, but must watch for political bias which managed to creep in last year.
sport….As your reporter likes to put down NRL at every opportunity, I think you should remember your programme goes to N.S.W and Qld. particularly when he refers to NRL players as “MUNGO’S’ as he has in the past.
All the best for year. Ian.

No, no, no!
Why does Radio National think we need yet another “drive-time” talk show? Surely the boring chit-chat of almost identical programs on the local ABC stations and the wasteland of commercial radio is enough. Surely Radio National’s raison d’être is to offer an intelligent alternative — which is has always done with such distinction.
So why this stunning failure of imagination?
Come on Radio National. Get back on track and continue to offer quality, innovative listening.
