Rdio confirms closure from December 23

Music streaming service Rdio has confirmed it will close from December 23 in Australia after the company was bought by rival Pandora last month.

Screen Shot 2015-12-18 at 8.37.22 amIn a notice to members globally the music service wrote: “As we announced last month, Rdio is being acquired. As part of the acquisition, the Rdioservice will be shutting down worldwide on December 22, 2015 at approximately 5pm PST.”

The music streaming service noted that users could log into the website to download an archive of their music collection.

After rival Pandora bought the company globally it insisted the company seek bankruptcy protections as part of the deal.

Locally Rdio struggled, despite signing partnership deals with Nova Entertainment and News Corp last year to drive subscribers. However neither of these deals were renewed.

Rdio joins the likes of Telstra’s Mog, which quietly closed earlier this year after a series of takeovers led to it being rolled into Apple Music and Deezer, which continues to be available in Australia despite closing its local sales office, in what appears to be an increasingly overcrowded market.

Back in 2012, DMG Entertainment (now Nova Entertainment) announced a joint streaming partnership with Rdio which was not renewed, with Nova selling out of the loss-making joint venture earlier this year.

Rdio users who wish to access their archive need to go to rdio.com/farewell.
