Sarah Jessica Parker: product placement never happened on Sex and the City

Sarah Jessica Parker at Cannes Lions 2014Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker said in Cannes today that brands never featured on the show as part of product placement campaigns.

Broadcast from 1998 until 2004, the HBO-produced show ran for 94 episodes.

“It’s important to know that we never put on a shirt because a brand asked us too,” she told journalists during a press conference at Cannes.

The only occasion that the producers of Sex and the City involved a brand was a bag loaned to them by luxury brand Fendi. But “that was part of the story,” she said, adding that she was “not superior to the idea” of product placement.

Parker chose not answer to answer a question about the treatment of women in advertising today.

“There are some really smart, careful campaigns [featuring women], but there are also exploitative and gratuitous campaigns,” she said.

She singled out the Dove ‘campaign for real beauty’ campaign as an example of an advertiser she admires for its portrayal of women.

Parker was sharing a stage with Joanna Coles, the editor-in-chief of women’s magazine Cosmopolitan.
