SBS CEO Michael Ebeid wins CEO of the Year
SBS CEO Michael Ebeid has won The CEO Magazine’s CEO of the Year award, while Jason Dooris, CEO of Atomic 212° was awarded runner-up.
The announcement:
Australia’s captains of industry gathered tonight to honour and celebrate Australia’s leading executives and CEOs at the sixth annual Executive of the Year Awards, presented by The CEO Magazine.
Taking out the coveted CEO of the Year category was Michael Ebeid, CEO and Managing Director of SBS.
Michael was also awarded with the Media Executive of the Year Award this evening.
Following Michael’s appointment in 2011, SBS has changed fundamentally and increased audiences across more platforms than at any other time in its 40-year history. Under Michael’s leadership, the business has excelled in a competitive market – a result of clear focus, an engaged leadership team, strong commercial revenues and a purpose that resonates with employees.
Michael is also a Member of the Order of Australia for “significant service to broadcast media and multicultural affairs as an executive, innovator and business leader.”
Michael Ebeid, CEO and Managing Director of SBS, said: ‘I’m incredibly honoured to receive both the CEO of the Year and Media Executive of the Year Awards and would like to thank the CEO Magazine, the judges, and everyone at SBS, who inspire me every day.
‘It’s an absolute privilege to lead an important organisation like SBS and as our nation’s cultural complexity continues to evolve, I’m proud of the increasingly important role that we play in helping Australians to understand each other better.’
In accepting his award, Michael also commented it was a great day for Marriage Equality and he hopes his partner of fourteen years can one day become his husband.
Michael was presented with his award at the glittering black-tie event held at Palladium, Crown Melbourne, in front of more than 550 guests. The Awards were hosted by MC Eddie McGuire and judged by an expert panel of highly regarded business professionals. These included Janine Allis, Founder of Boost Juice and Retail Zoo, and investor on Shark Tank Australia, and Libby Roy, VP and MD of PayPal Australia.
There were nine finalists in the CEO of the Year category. The runner-up was Jason Dooris, CEO of Atomic 212°, while Barry Fitzgerald, CEO of Roy Hill, was Highly Commended.
CEO and Founder of The CEO Magazine Chris Dutton said he was extremely proud that the Australian business community continued to embrace the Executive of the Year Awards.
“It really is an honour to stage an event that is a true celebration of Australia’s leading business executives. Many thanks go to the companies for embracing our awards – the amount of entries every year is staggering; it’s a fantastic achievement for all finalists and winners.”
“The superb business acumen displayed by applicants across all categories is truly inspiring. The winners are individuals who are working to build the Australian economy, they share those defining attributes of leadership, innovation, and the courage to take risks, and have also shown they are willing to drive strategic change. The most important assets in any business really are the staff, and that is the very essence of these awards.”
With more than 600 entries, the Awards identify the achievements of aspiring and established leaders in 23 categories across industry sectors such as media, retail, construction, energy and resources, health and pharmaceutical, and telecommunications.
Other highlights of the evening included Gina Rinehart from Hancock Prospecting Group being named Chairperson of the Year for a third time, Shelley Sullivan, Founder and CEO of ModelCo, being presented with the Retail Executive of the Year Award, and Bob Black, CEO of StarTrack and Group COO of Australia Post taking out the Transport and Logistics Executive of the Year Award.
