SBS returns to cinema in film distribution deal with Madman Entertainment

SBS has entered into a co-distribution venture with Madman Entertainment to acquire six films to distribute across Australia and New Zealand over the next two years.

The deal marks a return to film distribution for the broadcaster, which distributed movies through SBS International in the 1990s and will secure both cinema and television broadcast rights for SBS.

The first film to be released via the partnership will be Danish crime-thriller The Keeper of Lost Causes, to be released in Australia and New Zealand in July. Based on Jussi Alder-Olsen’s Department Q bestsellers, the film has grossed $8m at the Danish box office to date, according to SBS.

Leon Coningham, head of SBS distribution, said SBS and Madman will split the cost of acquisitions and the profits in the joint deal.

He said: “SBS has long been known as the go to place for independent and international film and we are excited to be joining forces with Madman Entertainment.”

Coningham said he hopes SBS will be able to build a sustainable, profitable business with Madman, positioning the company at the heart of the film community.

Independent film and television distribution and rights management company Madman has partnered with SBS in home entertainment for more than nine years.

Paul Wiegard, managing director at Madman Entertainment, said: “Madman are proud of our long standing relationship with SBS. The film Keeper of Lost Causes is an ideal first step into partnering in all rights management with strong revenue prospects across all distribution channels.”
