SCA reintroduces 2Day FM breakfast team with Hughesy, Ed and Erin Molan in 2021

Southern Cross Austereo is launching a new talent-driven breakfast show on Sydney’s 2Day FM in 2021, revealing its new offering ‘The 2Day FM Morning Crew with Hughesy, Ed and Erin Molan’.

The announcement sees Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes and Ed Kavalee move from the national drive slot. They’ll be joined by ACRA-winning Nine sports presenter and member of 2GB’s continuous call team Erin Molan, who’ll get a crack at her first major FM gig.

The launch of a new personality show sees the end of SCA’s Music For Breakfast show, which launched with Jamie Angel as its sole presenter in August of 2019.

The latest iteration of 2Day’s breakfast show comes after a long line of attempts to replace Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, who left a huge hole when they departed SCA for Australian Radio Network’s new KIIS FM station in 2014.

Since their departure, talent to have hosted the show has included Merrick Watts, Jules Lund, Sophie Monk, Mel B, Dan Debuf, Maz Compton, Rove McManus, Sam Frost, Harley Breen, Em Rusciano, Ash London and Grant Denyer.

SCA will be hoping that they can break the station’s duck on breakfast with the combination of Hughes, Kavalee and Molan, all experienced broadcasters in their own right.

Hughes has hosted drive radio in Australia on various networks including Nova and ARN since the early 2000s, much of that time alongside Kate Langbroek.

“My inbox is already full of DM’s from Sydney real estate agents. Look, I can’t buy all of them but I’ll have a crack!” he said.

“Until then I will be staying in Kyle Sandilands’ pool house. In all seriousness, I have a ball working with Ed and I’m super pumped to be working with Erin.

“This is going to be a blast. From 10am every day you will find me at the Bondi outdoor gym busting shirtless workouts until my manboobs get rock hard!”

The 2Day FM breakfast slot has had a range of talent including Ash London and Grand Denyer

Kavalee, also an established TV personality, has hosted a variety of different breakfast shows on SCA across its Triple M and Hit Networks.

He said; “I’m fired up to continue working with Hughesy and excited about teaming up with Erin. We have a show ready to roll that I know will deliver the fun Sydney needs in 2021.”

Molan, currently the weekend sports presenter on Sydney’s number one news bulletin with Nine, said it’s an honour to be trusted with the role.

“To be trusted with this role is a huge honour and I can’t wait to embark on this new adventure with two of Australia’s comedy greats,” she said.

Anyone who has listened to me on radio or watched me on TV over the past few years would be surprised that I’ve been brought into the fold as the ‘sensible one’.  I was equally as amused and made sure to sign very quickly before anyone discovers I’m anything but…”

SCA chief content director Dave Cameron said adding Erin Molan to an already established show will be a big advantage. “We’re lucky to have a brilliantly hilarious and established show sitting in our fold that Sydney already knows and loves and is ready to hit the ground running in 2021,” he said.

“Hughesy had the number one drive show in Sydney for many years and collectively the crew are all trusted, strong performers in our target market.

“In bringing back a headline breakfast show again to 2Day, it was critical for us to deliver the combination of established chemistry, familiarity, existing high passion for our talent, deep breakfast radio experience and, most importantly, a show focused completely on Sydney every morning.

“The 2Day FM Morning Crew with Hughesy, Ed and Erin will bring a clever wit with a show that’s already at the top of its game.  We can’t wait to make strong inroads and get 2Day pumping again.”

The 2Day FM Morning Crew with Hughesy, Ed and Erin will be heard from 6am-9am on Monday, January 18 next year, with an hour also to be broadcast nationally across the Hit Network at 6pm.

Hit Network head Gemma Fordham said the show will continue with the current ‘feel good’ music format on 2Day FM.

“Hughesy and Ed have a chemistry and shorthand that can’t be faked, and our listeners connect to their candour about their lives, kids, relationships and pop culture. Erin is an impressive broadcaster who possesses the rare mix of fun and clout,” she said.

“We will continue to build on a roster of regular guests to bring the 2DayFM Morning Crew to life and we know Sydney will be excited by this show in 2021 – a genuinely funny show to start the day, alongside our emotive ‘feel great’ music format.”
