SCA & Ten sign podcast distribution and production agreement

Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) and Network Ten (ViacomCBS) have signed an agreement for the distribution, hosting, sales representation,
and development of new podcast co-productions in 2022 and beyond.

The agreement will see Network Ten’s existing podcasts, including The Professor and the Hack with Hugh Riminton and Peter Van Onselen, Short Black with Sandra Sully, Australian Survivor: Talking Tribal, and Where’s William Tyrrell?, housed exclusively on SCA’s LiSTNR.

The news comes a day after SCA acquired Kinderling, an Australian kids’ radio and podcast company. SCA’s LiSTNR and independent publisher, Schwartz Media, also have a “strategic partnership” in place over the latter’s titles, 7am and The Culture, with the two working on co-production opportunities to develop and publish new “journalist-led podcast.

The LiSTNR team will now also collaborate with Network Ten on a number of new co-productions, including a weekly football podcast in conjunction with the network’s A-Leagues broadcasts.  The new co-produced podcasts will include a concurrent TV broadcast and audio on demand launch.

In addition, SCA will provide editorial, hosting, distribution, and sales representation across all existing and new Network Ten podcasts.

In July 2021 SCA and Network Ten entered into a regional television affiliation agreement, first flagged in March. The agreement is for a term of two years from 1 July 2021 and results in the ViacomCBS-owned Network Ten extending its metropolitan free-to-air television content from channels 10, 10 Bold, 10 Peach and 10 Shake into the regional Queensland, Southern New South Wales and Victoria commercial television licence areas.

SCA CEO Grant Blackley, said:  “Our partnership with Network Ten expands on our existing regional television affiliation agreement as we jointly explore avenues to invest in new and existing audio on demand offerings. From existing to future franchises, we aim to provide a multiplatform video and audio offer to our broad and expanding audiences. This is a unique and exciting approach and one that complements the LiSTNR suite of content.”

Jarrod Villani, chief operating and commercial officer and executive vice president, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand said: “This agreement further demonstrates the ongoing collaboration between Network Ten and SCA which only serves to strengthen our services and offerings.”

The agreement is effective from 1 January 2022.
