Screen Queensland proposes low-budget feature program
Screen Queensland has proposed a low budget features program be added to the incentives the state screen agency offers.
The Launchpad program, if accepted by the Queensland screen community, will support low budget drama productions in any genre with budgets up to $1.5m.
The proposal comes as part of the agency’s annual review of funding programmes for 2012-13.
Other key proposals are dropping the maximum investment per project by $100,000, from $750,000 to $650,000 for feature productions and $500,000 to $400,000 for documentary productions.
Launchpad is looking to build Queensland talent by providing a packaged opportunity for experienced practitioners to make commercially driven, audience-focused films.
The program will support one project per year over three years. Should it be accepted, it will being from July 2012.
Four key criteria will be looked at when selecting the projects, The potential to realise the story on a low budget, the quality of the script and the team’s understanding of the material, the involvement of Queenslanders, the likely audience appeal of the project.
Finalists in the selection process will be required to participate in an intensive program called Evolution consisting of seminars, workshops, and script development before a final film-maker or team is selected.
The proposed changes will be presented to the Queensland screen industry on 24 April at the agency’s program consultation and industry networking event.
I hope NSW adopts this. I’ve got a kick-arse low budget comedy drama script…

Here we go again – “experienced practitoners” only need apply – “finalists will be required to participate in an intensive program of seminars workshops & script development”. Thses people have absolutely no idea about writers or commercial filmmaking – thankfully they have’nt included water boarding – pathetic.
